Old Dominion University: Giving Back and Moving Ahead |
| |
As 2010 draws to a close, Monarchs everywhere are reflecting on the year past. 2010 has been marked by stellar academic and athletic performances, increased alumni support and a focused vision for the university's future. A key point in Old Dominion University's mission: to give back to our community, state, nation and world.
From newer initiatives such as ODU's Center for Service & Community Engagement or the Alumni Association's renewed Legislative Network, to long standing traditions like the nursing program's community health curriculum and the student-run Dominion Fund calling center, Monarchs are truly making an impact.
As you read these stories of students, graduates and traditions shaping the future of the university and welfare of those around them, we hope you are inspired to get involved. Join us 2011 as we work to move the university ahead and give back to those we meet along the way.

Scholarship as a "Motivation to Give Back"
|
At the 2010 Hugh H. Vaughn Scholarship Luncheon, electrical engineering student Brett Sawyer, a recipient of several scholarships, shared his thanks for the gifts that allowed him to dedicate himself completely to his academic experience at ODU.
Scholarships, he explained from a first hand perspective, not only allow students like him to "develop a deeper appreciation for academics" but likewise motivate recipients to give back. Watch the video of his address on YouTube. |

| Support Old Dominion University by Speaking Up |
Over the past years, ODU administrators have continually made their case that the state fund the university at an equitable level to that of other state supported institutions.
As the legislature reconvenes in early 2011, add your voice to the plea. ODUAA's Legislative Network is a volunteer program providing alumni with information and tools to advocate for our alma mater at the state, local and national levels.

A Focus on Serving Others: ODU's Center for Service & Civic Engagement
In only its third year as a division of the Office of Student Activities and Leadership, ODU's Center for Service & Civic Engagement has become a resource for students who are not content only to live and study in Hampton Roads, but are dedicated to improving the quality of life for its citizens.
The Center supports and expands this commitment by serving as a clearing house of volunteer opportunities through partnerships with non-profits locally and nationally. Opportunities range from mentoring elementary students or peers, advocating for social issues including animal rights, AIDS activism and sustainability issues, to getting involved with national and international non-profits.
ODU students are responding in record number to give of their time with students reporting over 100,000 service hours through dozens of partnerships in the last year alone. Read about the Center's contributions to the university and community.

Dominion Fund Calls from Monarch to Monarch
On any given night you might receive a phone call from one of the 30 dedicated Dominion Fund student callers, or "Team DFCC" (Dominion Fund Calling Center) as they have named themselves.
With each call, these students connect with alumni and friends of the university as one Monarch to another, informing you of campus events and changes, updating biographical records and securing financial support for ODU. Read more to learn how these future alumni are providing graduates with opportunities to give to ODU.

ODU Nursing: a Lasting Legacy of Helping Hampton Roads
Future nurses, perhaps more than students in many other fields, require a commitment to community service in order to fully understand and appreciate their discipline.
ODU's undergraduate nursing program recognizes the need for hands-on experience in a variety of clinical settings while acknowledging the university's and profession's shared emphasis on contributing to the community's well-being. In order to provide students with ample opportunity to both learn and give back, the curriculum includes a two-semester community health course through which Monarchs are directly helping the citizens of Hampton Roads to the tune of over 6,500 hours of community service each year. Learn about the program's initiatives and the contributions they're making to Hampton Roads.
